Breast feeding moms, when did your baby start sleeping through the night?

Not just a 5-6 hour stretch but actually through the night? My first child was going through the night or with just 1 feeding at 3 months but #2 is 3.5 months old and usually is still up every 3 hours. When do most breastfed babies start getting in longer stretches?

My 1st baby was exclusively breast and she slept through the night, 10 hours or more at around 8 weeks. I am not kidding. I didn't know (at the time) that that was unheard of.

My 2nd was about 8 months old before she'd sleep through, 8-9 hours and my 3rd was about 5 mnths when he started going about 10.

I must say, I have pretty big babies, 8+lbs at birth so I am not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Rather than trying to get him on a routine, I'd be focusing on making those night feeds less tiring. Forget the crib. Keep him in a bassinet by your bed or IN your bed, if you're comfortable with that and can do so safely. When he wakes, you reach over and pick him up (or roll over), and nurse. Neither you nor he wakes up fully, so when he's done, he'll drop back to sleep and you can too. Unless he's dirty, dont' worry about changing the diaper. If he IS dirty, change him first, so you don't wake him up again after he drops off to sleep. If you use cloth, consider disposibles at night to make your life easier. Remember, none of this is forever. Your baby is still a newborn, In a couple of weeks or months he'll probably be sleeping longer and better, and you can then move him to the crib, go back to cloth at night, and work on a 'bedtime routine.' But a 'bedtime routine' for a baby who is eating every 2-3 hours around the clock is pretty pointless, since all hours are the same to him.

My daughter started around 2 months and did it til we moved to a new apartment when she was 5 months old. Then it took like another 6 months to get her back on track. She's been sleeping through the night for about a month now and she just turned 1. Every baby is different!

  • My son started sleeping about 8 hours around 6 weeks. He would do that about 60% of the time for a few weeks. Now that he's 16 weeks old, he's sleeping through the night (8-10 hours) on a regular basis. Every once in a while (like last night) he'll wake in the early morning around 3AM and I'll nurse him. But those are getting fewer and farther between now. I think I got really lucky, because he's such a good sleeper and seems to know just when I'm ready for him to wake up.

Both my kids were breast fed. My son slept through the night at 4 weeks. I hated that because I was getting very engorged and leaking badly. My daughter is 7 months and still does not sleep through the night at a regular basis. Each child is different, so try not to compare them.

erm my breastfed 9 month old is still up about once a night.....

my other two (both BF'd) started sleeping through at about 9 months. Most bf babies sleep through by 12 months.

My 13 month old still wakes about 2-3 times to nurse at night. My 3 year old wakes 1-2 times at night to nurse.

Heck, I wake once at night to go to the bathroom and have a sip or two of water.

A 3.5 month old waking every 3 hours is very, very, very normal.

  • it really varies for every baby. My son occasionally slept through the night when he was under a year - but it was really rare, or really sparatic. He got a little better at it by 13 months, but still has trouble at 2 and 1/2 years. He's never been a great sleeper.

My daughter began STTN (from around 11-6) at 7 months.

All babies are different, so nobody can say when YOUR baby will start going more than 3 hours. It could happen tomorrow, or not for another 6 months or more.

My daughter is one and still wakes 1-3 times a night.

    I'm 25 and I still wake 1-2 times a night.

Nobody actually sleeps night to morning, people wake up all the time, just not usually enough to notice. When your baby will stop waking up enough to need your help to go back down is dependent entirely on him.
