That varies dramatically from woman to woman. Honestly, some women don't really feel anything at all. Others feel like they're having contractions for a minute or so. I was somewhere in the middle, and I've never had children... Allegedly, having given birth makes the procedure easier. However, I've read accounts of virgins feeling only mildly uncomfortable and parous women screaming... So you really can't know until you go through with it. Just breathe, and don't go into it expecting it to be that bad. I think most women tend to find that it's not as bad as they thought it would be; either way, it's very brief, and entirely worth it.

As a 20 y/o in a monogamous relationship, never had children, this is a pretty appealing deal. As a student, I also save myself the worry of taking a pill every day at around the same time. Now, I had Mirena inserted two hours ago, maybe more towards an hour. I had no numbing medication, but took Ibuprofen at least 2 hours beforehand. It was pretty painful - but compared to the bad cramps I had before, it wasn't much worse. The absolute worst lasts for only a few short seconds, and if you remain calm and breathe, it's easy and simple from there. I recommend getting a ride home, but I was able to drive myself. Make sure the rest of your day will be slow, and take care for the next few days; at least, that's what I was told.
Also, the best time to get it in would be just before your period, or maybe when you're on it. This is because the cervix is naturally at it's widest setting. For women who have had children, my doctor told me insertion is way easier and less painful.
Sorry that I'm not able to provide long-term effect information. A friend has told me that her periods were irregular for about 3-5 months, and then after that they were light and she loved it.

I hate to tell you my horror story, lol, but here it goes. I got the marina 4 years back. It hurt so bad! I went to a health department instead of a doctors office. You are suppose to have a baby first, but instead she measuered me to make sure that it would fit properly. I'm so tall that it did.. but the measuring hurt almost as much as the putting it in, only didn't hurt as long. The doctor that put it in had not put many in. I was shaking so bad (from the pain) that it actually got jerked back out and she had to insert another one. I had it in for a year with sharp pains on and off. Went back not too long after it was inserted and they said it was sideways somehow and they reajusted it.. hurt almost as bad as when they put it in.. I kept having the sharp pains for the entire year, and went to a different doctor to get it take out. They were afraid that it had some how almost punctured a hole through my uterus since the pain kept on going, and they said that it caused a lot of scar tissue and it will probably be hard for me to have a baby. (luckly I've had one boy and now I'm pregnant with #2 with no problem getting pregnant.) My sister-in-law got the Maraina about 6 months ago. The pain actually made her pass out. BUT my mother got one around the same time that my sister-in-law did. She's right on the edge of minapause and wanted to make sure they wouldn't have a chance at another one. She didn't get the maraina though, she got a different one. I'm not sure of the name of it but it's smaller and lasts 10 years instead of the 5 that the maraina does. She said that it did hurt pretty bad putting it in, but only for a few seconds and she hasn't had any problems with it since, so if I were you, I would ask about different types other than the maraina, and I would make sure the doctor has done plenty. DO NOT let them use a student nurse so she can use you as her test subject!!
Source(s): Personally, I would go with the nuva ring if I were you. You only have to change it once a month and no scaring, so you can get pregnant easier next time around. Also, you can take it up for up to 3 hours at a time (per day) if it bothers you while you have sex. Thats what I used between my babies and I really liked it. ALSO: I should probably tell you that I am extra sensitive in that area. I've felt both my babies early, Pap tests always hurt me and I have horriable ovulation pains.. so maybe it's just because I'm so sensitive??!! I have no clue, but just based on my experience, I do not recomend it - Anonymous1 decade ago
I had the Mirena for about 6 months before I switched birthcontrols, when it was put in it didnt hurt at all that much, but i suggest taking some tylonal before having it put in. The reason I had it removed was because during the whole 6 months I bleed every two weeks and I was constantly in pain and having cramps. Everyone is different though, maybe it would go better for you. Good luck!

Hello,
When the DR. Inserts the IUD into your uterus it will be slightly uncomfortable. To me it felt like a mild contraction. It is a quick procedure though. Once mine was inserted I didn't even know it was there. Depending on the mans size and sexual positions he may be able to feel it. I loved having my IUD. Make sure there is something for you to squeeze when they insert it and you will do great.
