can i break apart the root ball of some potted tulips i bought with out hurting them so i can plant in a row?

    Wait until the leaves die back, then just dump them out and gently separate the bulbs with your fingers. Don't worry about hurting the roots, they die off and the bulbs sprout new ones next season.
