Math question. How many words would 1/3 words of an 850 word article be?

All you do is multiply the 2 numbers together. So you have to multiply 850 x 1/3. You would multiply the 850 by the numerator first (the 1) and divide by the denominator (the 3) and you will get 283.33->.

1 ⁄ 3 of 850 is the same as 850 ⁄ 3.

this works because any integer (whole number) can be written as x ⁄ 1, where x is the integer. A number is unchanged when it is divided by 1: for example, 2 ⁄ 1 = 2.

But here, we have 850.

1 ⁄ 3 of a number is the same as 1 ⁄ 3 times the number:

850 ⁄ 1 × 1 ⁄ 3

when we're multiplying fractions, all we do is multiply together the top numbers of both (the numerator), and then do the same with the bottom numbers of both (the denominator). This results in another fraction:

850 × 1 = 850

1 × 3 = 3

= 850 ⁄ 3

and you can work this out on your calculator.

In short, 1 ⁄ x of y = y ⁄ x.

although, as you probably know, you can't submit .(333) of a word

so either round it down to 283

or indeed, take it to 2 significant figures: 280. It's a nice, round number.

If you divide 850 into 3 parts you will get the answer

850/3 = 283 .333 i.e 283 words approx
