My Computer only recognizes my thumb drive on boot up, but not on hot-plug. What's wrong?
I have an Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 7. Whenever I plug my PNY attache 4gb thumb drive in while the computer is running, I get an error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" However, if the device is plugged into the USB port when the computer is booting, it works just fine until I try to unplug it and plug it back in.
I have already replaced the device driver and searched the Microsoft website for ideas to no avail. Has anyone else had this same problem?

The code 10 just means the device registry key doesn't have a "reason" to give. "10" is a generic "it doesn't work and I don't know why" from Windows.
You didn't give the model Acer. Are you sure the usb port is usb 2.0? Sometimes there will be a usb 1.1 port for external keyboard and mouse and a usb 2.0 port for devices that need the speed.
Also try plugging in a usb 2.0 EXTERNALLY powered hub and plug the thumb drive into the hub. If it works then the port lacks the power to start the thumb drive. USB is weak. I have had problems plugging thumb drives in an older Apple laptop, but I got the error that I overloaded the port. It didn't happen all the time. Unplugging and replugging usually fixed it. Some thumb drives were just better behaved than others.

even inspite of the undeniable fact which you probably did no longer supply any information approximately your laptop, even inspite of the undeniable fact that, i might recommend you verify the present USB port to ensure it rather is two.0 like minded. mutually as plugging it in, beware for such errors message as “you're Connecting a 2.0 gadget to a Non 2.0 port,” or something comparable! additionally, attempt connecting the aggravating rigidity by way of yet another USB port and then restart the device later on. in the adventure that your laptop remains no longer able to discover the aggravating rigidity, then it must be defective.
