Want to wipe laptop with vista without losing vista?
I've come to the conclusion that to get rid of all the crap (including trojan horses even though I have AVG and Comodo) that's on my laptop it's best to wipe it and start again. I've got vista, but never got around to backing up files. Is there anyway to wipe it without losing vista?
I wanted to do a system restore from a particular point, but looking at the dates it seems like my system restore points are only in the last 5 days, which does not help.
Cheers in Advance x

Sorry, but this will be a long answer...
Have you tried going into Safe Mode and backing up all your files that way? If not, try it. Safe Mode only allows the absolutely necessary programs to run, thus usually stopping the virus from running (key word usually). To go into Safe Mode, do the following: Start > Run > type: msconfig > Boot tab at the top > Under Boot Options, check the box that says 'Safe Boot' > Apply button > Ok. System will now reboot in safe mode. Once it reboots, then try backing everything up to an external device (external hard drive, flash drive, etc.).
Once you have everything backed up, you can wipe Vista and reinstall it. Unfortunately there is no way to wipe your computer without losing everything. People wipe their machines to get rid of stuff because it gets rid of absolutely everything on the hard disk. That's why it's effective. So, try backing everything up and then reinstall Windows.
After that, install the drivers for your machine, the Windows updates, and then I would recommend going with a different anti virus. I use Avira Anti Virus and it's amazing. It's light on system resources (allows your computer to run faster), has a high detection rate, and it's free. Then I also use some other programs as well to help protect myself from malware. I've listed those below. Install them after you get the OS stabilized and back up so that you have full protection before you put anything back into the system.
Here is a video reference guide on how to use these anti malware programs from start to finish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ah3efRdWes

Malwarebytes (free, very good cleaner): http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware...
Super Anti Spyware (free, does a pretty good job of cleaning whatever is left over, good detection rate, especially in combination with other programs): http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edi...
Hopefully this was helpful and good luck getting things back up and running!

A system restore will not revert back changes of a virus or malware. If you completely wipe the hard drive by formatting it then no, you can not reinstall windows without the installation disks.
However most new laptops come with a partition which can reset the operating system to default. This does wipe all data, so make sure you back up you files. To do this google the laptop make and resetting to factory defaults.E.g. my laptop is acer and to do reset to the factory default you to st start>all programs>Recovery Managemen>Click the “Restore”>Click “Restore System to Factory Default.”
This may remove some virsues however if a rootkit has been installed then this can be saved on the computer chip, BIOS, which can not be removed by wiping a hard drive.
Install some decent AV that can detect rootkits, most usually do.

well what i would do since you have internet acess is go to vista and get a copy of your operating system. Put it on a usb drive or a cd would be better and keep it. Then you can go and delete all the partitions out of your computer so there is nothing left. Now reinstall your vista by booting from your cd you made. you can robably boot from cd right away and it will bring you to the screen you need to delete your partitions too. You should of had a disk that came with your comp. that has your os on it

Truly, there is no assessment absolutely....simply because viewing television depends on the gunky thoughts of a Television set entertainer who's main concerns are budget, popularity and ratings and Hell with theme integrity, or, for example, anything truly creative.

create your own recovery disk to install vista, search for ''recovery manager'' or download it here and burn it as an image, use the product key labelled on your computer, dont not enter the product just click ok then activate windows online with the prod key.

if repair will not work and you reinstall vista your files will be gone>that is why you should back files on a regular basis if they are important to you

to wipe your hd means you remove vista
vista is probably on a hidden partition, but then so is the virus
