What is the difference between being a real estate salesperson and a broker in New York?

I'm looking up info on taking a course to get licensed and getting pretty confused. One of my friends said she just took a course that was 90 hours, took/passed test, and is now a broker. But she didn't work as a sales person first, which apparently is a requirement for a year.

I also am a single mom with a toddler so I would need to do online courses. Does anyone have a recommendation for an online course?

    A 'salesperson' is an agent. They can just sell property and need to work under a broker. A broker is a person who is allowed to conduct the transaction and accept liability. The licensing is much longer for a broker than an agent. The timing a requirements vary state to state.

    You'll need to contact the New York Real Estate Commission to find out requirements for Broker licensing. I'll post a link to a requirements page as a source below.
