why are hazard light buttons always on the center console now?
all the cars i remember before about 2000 have the hazard/4way light switches on the steering column or otherwise unobtrusive location. now they're front and center on the dash. was there a law passed or something that changed this? why? did people not know where they were before? does this make them any more likely to remember to use them? (i doubt it)

The main reason is that most all steering column shrouds are made of plastic instead of steal like they did in the past...
If the hazard switch was placed on this plastic shroud then the chances are that it would break it...

Because it is dangerous to put your hand through the steering wheel to turn them on while driving. The new locations are both easy to find and easy to access safely while operating your car.
