All these quotes deal with freedom; they are interwoven
1.no amount of liberty will satisfy the masses; thus we must lead them what to appreciate- Vladimir Lenin
This could be a quote from George Orwells 1984; essentially Lenin, an advocate of Communism is saying that people cannot be trusted to make the "right " decisions if they are given scope to choose freely
2.one mans death is a tragedy a million mens deaths is a statistic-Josef Stalin
Stalin (whole name meant, literally, man of steel) is saying that a death is tragic at the individual level because it has meaning for other people; a million deaths cannot be grasped at the personal level; they are a statistic. I think he said this about the Russian -German conflict as part of WW2
3.the death of millions helps a nation develop-Josef Stalin
I think that this is Stalin speaking about the massive scale purges which took place after the Communists gained power in the USSR; he meant that by eradicating anyone who by virtue of their status ( eg better class peasant) the way was cleared for the proletariat to take power and develop.the nation. A dangerous belief.
4.with every man there is a problem. The solution no man no problem-josef stalin
Get in my way and you are dead, Stalin was ruthless and determined; he had opponents killed or sent to slave labour camps.
5.there is no freedom except for that which the mind creates-alexander solzhitzyn
Solzhitzyn was himself a victim of oppression; he is saying here, very clearly that the sole real freedom in this world is the freedom to think. Again, think 1984; there this message is spelt out clearly; the thought police seize anyone who expresses dissident views - and dissident has a virtually untrammeled definition. In this novel the idea that you can control peoples minds by limiting their knowledge of words is also powerful - an is the antithesis of the quote above.
