Can you send a text message to 911 emergency services?

If you are in an emergency situation but are unable to talk for some reason can you send a text message to 911 and let them know where you are and what your emergency is?

I have heard some departments experimenting with text messaging, but it will be quite a while before it is common.

In the meantime, you can just call and leave the line open without talking. They will be able to track you through GPS or through triangulation of local towers and will send an officer.

Some 911 centers are able to accept text messages, I don't know which ones do and which ones don't though.

in most cases no, although that is be work out

    the problem being that

say that you are have 310 area code cellphone but you are in say New York

the 911 text message could end going To LAPD (which a lot good that would do if your problem is

in New York city!)that's one the problem of texting to 911
