Is death the opposite of life, and if so, why do people say the dead pass on to life?

you pass on to eternal life in heaven.

-Kind of... I would say not living is the opposite of life... death being the ceasing of life.

Some say the dead pass on to life if they believe in an afterlife, such as Christians (Heaven and Hell).

Others who do not believe in an afterlife would not say the dead pass on to life... (except in the case where they are talking about the decomposition of the body gives nutrients into the environment that other organisms need to live off of).
