LOST - question about the whispers?

That is possible, they are stuck there for doing bad things, and they warn people that are alive of the Smoke Monster because it's bad, plus it could be tied to The Smoke Monster used to be able to turn into dead people too.

I agree with the other users. There are no whispers before Ol' Smokey arrives, just rattles and clicks. Maybe the people whispering may warn others about things, including the Smoke Monster, but I don't think thats their primary purpose. I hate Michael, but I believe him.

I read a blog that talked about Michael telling Hurley last night that the whispers were the voices of people who had died but were stranded on the Island. Blog said, didn't they represent the coming of the Smoke Monster? My question (sorry it took so long) - couldn't it be the spirits of...

It is the whispers of spirits of dead people who have a connection with the Island and are trapped there, essentially in purgatory. Usually they are in in this situation because of the wrongs they have commited in their life (such as murder), but we have also seen spirits on the Island who aren't evil and died off of the Island (like Isabella and Emily Linus).

The whispers are not a warning of the smoke monster. If anything, they wouldn't be against the man in black, but actually on his side, because they too are trapped on the Island, like him.

Just a theory of mine, but I believe that Sayid is now possessed by one of the whispering spirits.

I never equated the whispers to the smoke monster. You always heard those weird rattles/clicks whenever the smoke monster was about to make it's appearance. I believe Michael's explanation to Hurley.

It can't really be a warning cuz you don't hear whispers every time the smoke monster comes, just clicks and things. It's actually just some people in a recording studio

I believe Michael when he said they were of those who are trapped on the island for being bad people. But Michael died off the island in the ocean, so I'm not sure why he is trapped there.
