There are two ways to do this - firstly, set a WPA-PSK key password (DO NOT USE WEP, it's useless) in the security menu on your router, and don't share that with anyone. You will need to re-connect your laptop (easily done in Windows, try to connect to your wireless router and it will ask you for the password). That's the easy way, but you can do MAC address filtering as well.

An IP address is a 'virtual' address, whereby anybody can choose any address they like (nearly, but I won't go into that here). A MAC address is physically burnt onto a card. If you look at the label on the bottom of your laptop, you will see a MAC address on there. You cannot change that address on the card (well, OK, so you can mask it with virtualisation products but again I won't go into that here).

If you go to a command prompt in Windows, type "ipconfig /all" (without the speech marks) you will see a Physical Address. This is your MAC address, and will be in the format of xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx (where x is an alphanumerical character).

WRITE THIS DOWN for your wireless card - oh and for your wired connection as well. Connect to your router via a cable. Different routers set this up in different ways, but it could be called MAC address filtering, or Access List or something similar, but it will be in the security menu. Switch this on. You will need to enter your MAC address in the fields to allow your PC to access the router. You will need to do this for every device you have accessing the router also, but don't worry, because all wireless equipped devices will have a MAC address label on them somewhere.

Some routers will tell you which MAC addresses they can see, so you may just be able to select it from a list.

Once this is all configured, the thieving so and so that is using your broadband will now not be able to access the router, because the router is physically preventing their wireless card from connecting. You may also wish to hide your SSID, if you have an option to do so.

If you wish to be really anul, you could find out who owns the console and point out to them that they are breaking the law, but I wouldn't bother, just cut them off unexpectedly in the middle of a gaming session on a Saturday night; as a gamer myself I can say that that will really hurt lol!

One final point, and for goodness sake please, make sure you change your admin password on routers. People near me have Sky, and Sky use a standard naming convention for their passwords - soooo easy to hack.

If you're not sure how to get into your router, again, type ipconfig /all, and you will see a Default Gateway - this is the IP address of your router, so in IE, just type http://192.168.0.1/ or whatever that address is. You should be asked for a userid which is usually admin, then a password. If you're really not sure, check the manual which came with your router, that usually tells you what your password is.

    I hope that helps!

Use mac address filtering on the router. Only mac addresses entered into the table will be allowed access.

First- stumble on the project inspite of if or no longer it relatively is which incorporate your ethernet cable or your router. 2nd- inspite of no count if it is your ethernet cable, use electric powered tape, untwist it, purchase a sparkling one, inspite of could restore it. inspite of no count if it is your router than disconnect it and connect it back. If that doesn't artwork then have somebody come stumble on out the project or look it up.
