Whats wrong with my stereo, Works for couple of min then no sound. Works again when powered on and does same?
My car stereo/dvd player has subs and an amp connected to it FYI.
So my radio will work for a couple of minutes then will not be working where there's no music or sound but the radio is still on.
If powered back on, the radio works again and does the same thing works for a couple of minutes and stops.
So whats wrong with it?
the best thing I can think of is that it has a short probably but how can I test for that?

One of a few things is going on here, you have grounded incorrectly, wired incorrectly, or the amp is putting off power incorrectly to the system. You may have an issue with the way you setup the bridged connection in the amp to the speakers, you could have grounded any number of circuits in the amp or the system, you could have messed up or burnt out completely the speakers or the wiring to the amp. You may have a fuse that is slightly damaged and teetering on the brink of failure. You could have even wired the stereo incorrectly as I did once and the wires themselves will cause the amp and speakers not to work.

It could be overheating which is likely the case, or you are giving it too low of a OHM load from the speakers, if you added extra speakers then the head unit may not be able to power them. other things that could be wrong are that you aren't using a proper remote wire or you have a loose ground connection (if you installed an aftermarket system).
if you think that its shorting the easiest way to check is to get a multimeter and test each wire in the harness with the connectivity tester to the ground of the car (attach the black lead to a shiny piece of bare metal and test the red lead to each of the wires on the harness to see which ones complete a circuit - wires that complete a circuit are shorting with the chassis)
hope that helps

First make sure that when you plug in head-phones or other speakers you hear sound, if you do then it is the speakers that have the problem so get new ones. If you don't hear anything then make sure you have a program that is outputting sound. (with vista when you click on the sound icon in the task bar you should see a green / grey bar going up and down to the beat of the sound, if not there is nothing to be heard.) With sound on make sure the volume is up enough to be audible. If you don't hear anything try going to the sound settings in control panel and make sure the output device you have selected is the speakers you intend to use

something overheating and switching off til it cools down, (a built in function in some semiconductors) try less volume/cooling fans in output transitor or power regulator area-reduce bass!!!
