rescued dog gave birth?
My friend rescued a dog from someone who was not taking care of it, she took her to a vet after she got her. She then learned that she is 15 lbs. under weight and has heartworms. And if that's not bad enough she was pregnant and due anytime. well a week after she got her, she had 4 puppies, all are doing well and have already found good homes when they are old enough. the problem is the babies are tearing moms teats up, what is the best thing to use on the teats that wont harm the puppies?

ANY reasonable, adult person can clip the puppy's nails! A human fingernail clipper is the easiest way to do so -- be careful not to clip too short but it is common for a few of the toenails to bleed a little (in fact in some breeds the nails are purposefully clipped very short, thus creating a shorter nail bed while it is less traumatic for the dog).

Yeap they will scratch the mothers milk glands. Take the puppies and mother to the vet.. they may be able to clip the claws a little. Only a vet should do this. How old are the puppies now? By the time they are 3 weeks they should be introduced to puppy food.. slowly and gradually, and as the days and weeks go by they need less mother's milk and more puppy food.
There is nothing to prevent the scratching as .. they tend to paddle on the teats to increase milk flow.. and in turn the claws scratch the mum.
