how formal is the captain's dinner on a cruise?

My mom keeps telling me about a captain's dinner on the cruise we're going on in the summer. I'm not sure how formal it is, and I kinda don't trust my mom because the last time she was on a cruise, I was 4... So. I have a pretty purple dress, but it's long. Comments?? Thanks:)

On 7 day cruises there are 2 nights designated as formal nights. On those evenings passengers dress up in their finest. You will see men in tuxes and suits. You'll see women in long gowns or cocktail dresses. Not everyone gets that dressed up. Some women will wear more simple, but pretty dresses or pants suits. And for those who do not want to get dressed up at all, there is usually a buffet that they can go to.

A long, pretty purple dress sounds lovely. If you need to wear it 2 nights, you might want to bring along different accessories.

Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

The Captain's dinner will usually be the more formal of the two or more formal nights on a cruise. That is, that's when the women will wear their fancier outfits.

Why would you not trust your mom about what constitutes formal wear just because you were last on a cruise at age 4?? Formal is formal. It sounds like your long dress will be just fine. Formal often means long dresses for women.

    Have fun!

The dress code in the main dining room on a cruise ship is "dressy casual" most nights and "elegant" on one or two nights (depending on the length of the cruise). The main dining room has long cloth tablecloths, lots of silverware, stemware, etc. That's why they would prefer that people not come in wearing jeans and an old t-shirt. On some lines, shorts are not permitted in the main dining room at dinner.

Your long purple dress should be perfect for the elegant/formal night.

that's dazzling and somewhat suited. you will discover which you do no longer could desire to gown up. The formal evenings are purely the captain chatting with the passengers from a balcony for a jiffy, then you purely pass and do as you opt for for the night. there is each which thank you to gown on a cruise, many nonetheless wore their casual equipment, some shorts, besides the fact that they do no longer look to be proper interior the eating places yet those wearers in all probability dined interior the buffets

If you go for dinner with someone, especially on a cruise, it will be formal. I suggest you dress formally.

Anything you would wear to a formal event like through school or somebody's work would be fine. Nothing overly frilly or fussy, but try and keep covered up a bit.

you should dress for the environment, if the dining room is elegantly decorated, and the music is elegant, you should know how to dress, personally, I find dress codes unnecessary, but you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess it shows a sense of respect.
