Is it at all harmful to copy from an original DVD?

A co-worker asked to borrow my DVD set of a tv series I purchased so he can copy (burn) it. Does this at all harm these original DVD´s?

    Sorry, you'll be hard pushed to copy original (legal) dvds.

    It wouldnt harm the dvd trying but, it wont work, they put blocks on it, cos its copyrighted.

    what are you talking about?

    It is possible by using programs such as ''DVD rippers''.

    And no it wont harm the original dvd if you just copy it not ''cut'' it.
