Giving dogs raw bones?
What are the guidelines for giving dogs raw bones to chew on? Can it be from any animal and any bone? Should they only come from a butcher or can I give one to my dog from cleaning off a ham, etc? I heard they were good to give dogs but I don't want to just give my dog one without knowing the specifics.
Thanks!

large weight bearing bones should be fed with MEAT on them.
Its the action of ripping meat from the bone that cleans the teeth.. not chewing the bone itself. Many raw feeders dont even offer the larger bones because they can chip teeth.
Yes, bones can be given from any animal.. pork, fish, and anything wild caught you may want to freeze for at least 2 weeks tho to make sure any disease or parasites are killed. (most domestic raised meats are fine- pork can carry trichinosis however)
Ham isnt ussually raw tho when you buy it.. its ussually smoked and cured. If you are going to offer raw bones.. it has to be RAW.. not cooked in any way.

I have a Bernese Mountain Dog from a breeder and she would put her parents on raw diets which include whole raw chickens wings. I know that raw chickens bones are fine the bone marrow is good for them. Its when you cook a bone that it becomes brittle and Dangerous for a dog to consume. Raw uncooked bones are fine. But always check with your vet before anything. Most people don't know and you don't want to go by what somebody thought they heard or read and think they know, especially when it comes to a living thing.

I plan on feeding the liver to my dogs too but I'm going to freeze it first. The general consensus seems to be that if the liver has worms in it, freezing it will kill them. Then I'll thaw it out later and feed it raw. I personally dont deer hunt but we have land with several gorgeous bucks that eat at my feeder every day, and (even though it's at the back of our 20 acres) they have still managed to catch the attention of a few hunters! I'm allowing them to take two by bow, and all I want in return is the backstrap from one, and the organs and other scraps. As far as bones, I've always heard that the ribs are best. Since they arent weight-bearing bones, they're softer and surrounded by more tissue and meat. If you have a few raw ribs to spare, I'm sure your dogs would enjoy them.

i usually get raw cow bones from the butcher and my dog hasnt had any problems with them, she loves them. they clean your dogs teeth really well and keep your dog occupied, but raw bones give dogs worse dog breath than the normal dog breath.
remember dogs used to eat raw animals all the time in the wild.
just dont give your dog cooked chicken bones because they can splinter and get stuck in your dogs thraot (ouch).

you should be very careful when giving dogs raw bones like from hams or steaks i wouldn't recommend it because my dog's veterinarian said it is not healthy for them. they can get splinters on their tongue or in there throat, nd stomach from these kinds of bones and they can easily choke. if you are going to give your dog(s) a bone i would suggest you would use treat bones or ones approved by your vet.
hope this helped!

Raw bones are okay, as long as they're not small or cooked.
Cooked bones can splinter and cause intestinal damage and small bones can be choked on.

You can give them those big bones, just not those really small chicken bones because it can tear up stuff in their stomachs.

you can feed your dog chicken breast too or even beef
whole raw chicken etc
if you are not so sure what kind of raw bones they eat
you can research on youtube.

I would suggest only fresh mammoth bones. Oh you can't find those? That's the only ones
