Why do (some) pickup truck drivers feel compelled to back into every parking space?
I see this a lot, at restaurants, supermarkets, the mall, bookstore, gas station, etc. I'm just curious. I wouldn't normally even care, but this morning the guy in front of me in the grocery store parking lot pulled past four open spots, just to stop, throw into reverse, and tried backing in to the second open spot, which I was blocking because I was going further down the lane to leave. He started gesticulating with his arms that I needed to back up myself, all in a huff. So that got me thinking about the subject. Is it force of habit, or what?

In some cases I would say they are buying something that is easier to load parked backwards and not stand in traffic loading it. Here in KS where there are a LOT of pickup trucks, I don't see them parking that way, unless they are loading something. I have no idea why they do it where you are, but interesting. It is one of those things that makes you go "mmm"?

Aside from all the other answers, you had someone that just didn't know how to do it very quickly and what not. What I see is that most people don't know how to parallel park, they are scared or do it wrong or slow and this is in CA, East coast you don't see that cause you have to LEARN cause that is something you are going to have to do but... skilled drivers that no how to drive well, can back up into a space very quickly and parallel park quickly so I say you just had bad luck with that experience.
Aside from the other observations you see that many people do it, I agree with some of the other answers, they make reasonable answers too.
Source(s): I don't drive a truck, and I park reverse into spots sometimes. The reason I do it is I can have much better visual, right/left and leave quickly. People should use common sense too, I have a lot of cars behind me, I won't back in even though I could get into the spot quickly, the driver behind you won't know and get into your cousin space. - GPLv 51 decade ago
When I drive my truck, I look for a parking space where no one is parked in front of me. Then I head in to space A, and continue into space B.
Thereby giving the impression that I backed my truck into space B. But I never even put my truck into reverse. I also do this with my car.
So why do I it? Because I like to have the ability to leave quickly. Without looking behind me, or backing up first.
Also, because I heard it pisses you off. Sorry.

the reason is because if a pickup would park forward then when they go to exit the parking space its more difficult to see if any traffic is coming and they could possibly back out and get hit in the bed of the truck.

Probably for the opposite reason as to why they feel compelled to use two parking spaces, theirs and the one in front of theirs. If they park into space A and space B is in front of them, they'll take up both spaces (though their truck really could have fit into A perfectly.
Do you know what else they do that is really annoying?
They park in that FIRST space in the parking lot, you know, the one right in front of the store (that isn't handicapped). Now, I drive a tiny car. Imagine how frustrating it is when you can't see around them and almost die from every car driving.

I drive a pickup and it's easier to back in when the spots around you are empty because somehow when you return someone has parked right next to you. The long bed combined with a bad turning radius makes it harder to manuever out of a spot in some lots. Pulling out is easier.

All drivers are advised to back into parking spaces and that is how all new drivers are being taught; It is easier to drive past a parking space to check for hazards before backing in than to assure no new hazards drive up when backing out.

True it's probably safer...but have you seen the size of some those things, I'd say they're just showing off their skills...because honestly i've seen some people in smart cars that couldn't back into a space!
Oh and as to the girl who says guys in pick ups have a small penis...really?? How many guys in pick ups, have shown you?? I personally think trucks are hot, and if the guy behind the wheel is good looking, well then, thats even better! :)

It's all about safety.
It is safer to back into a spot than it is to back out into traffic.
You can catch someone faster if they hit your car.
You can leave really fast if you make someone mad.
You get a lot practice backing just in case you are ever in a car chase.
And like someone said trucks can have blind spots and bad steering.
* This is usually done by older people that are used to not having power steering.

I'll answer this. I usually drive a Honda CRV, but sometimes I will drive my dad's Tacoma. In the Tacoma, there are no obstacles that block your vision and backing is very easy. In the CRV, the back seat blocks your view of the space.
