Watering tips for flower garden and a tree... what would you recommend?

I recently put together a small flower garden for my mom and we planted some lilies, carnations, johnny jump-ups and a few other kinds of small flowers. I also planted a red bud tree, and two small patches of ornamental pampas grass. All the plants were labeled as low maintenance, so my only question is about the watering. How often, how much, and for how long before I just let mother nature take over watering?

What would you recommend for a watering schedule for each of these:

1) the flower garden

2) the red bud tree

3) the pampas grass

I've not had much luck growing things before and I was told by someone at a plant nursery that about 80% of plants die from improper watering habits. Can anyone help me out?

Update:

Okay well for soil our yard is mostly sand. It's not great soil so we worked some gardening dirt and manure into the flower bed.

Also want to add that most of the flowers in the flower bed are day lilies.

Soil conditions vary, so a schedule based on time isn't appropriate. Just water enough to keep the soil moist, and when it is almost dry, water again. Most plants don't like to have "wet feet", so you don't want to overwater. Watering should continue throughout the first growing season, as it takes that long for the plants to establish their root systems. After that they should do quite nicely on their own, only needing watering during an extended dry spell.

well water alot. I know this stuff i have many plants growing. i am like a professional. So what you do is make sure your soil is always moist. Do not overwater. Trust me. Try to water with a hose and use like um..... like a mist so it does not damage them. GOOD LUCK! PLEASE MAKE ME THE BEST ANSWER!!! :)
