What are the different types of Judaims?

I am teaching my son about religion - starting with Judaism. All he knows so far is that there are different religions and I taught him the list, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism (I told him there are many more but this list will be enough for now). I'm starting to teach him more about Judaism and I was thinking of teaching him that there were six types of judaism (namely, Chasidic, Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed, Liberal and Progressive). Is this list accurate or have I misunderstood the Judaism101 website I've been reading e.g. are two or more types of Judaism on my list the same teachings by a different name or are there any others that should be on the list that I have missed?

The term "Progressive" is normally used to cover Reform (NB not 'Reformed') and Liberal branches. One difficulty with trying to talk about different 'types' of Judaism is that the movement groupings vary There's Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist in the US; Orthodox, Masorti, Reform and Liberal in the UK and Europe; and US Reform is very different from UK Reform which is closer to US Conservative. Orthodox covers both what is known as 'Modern Orthodox' and the various Chassidic and Charedi groups.

Basic theology is exactly the same among the different movements in Judaism and we often study each other's writings and commentaries. This is different from the denominations in Christianity, which have varying, and sometimes antagonistic, theologies. Hence you might find it easier and actually more accurate to teach your son about the core beliefs of Judaism and explain that there is a wide spectrum of observance of the mitzvot (the 613 commandments, not all of which can be carried out by any one individual, eg some are for men only, some only possible when there is a Temple in Jerusalem) from the absolutely-to-the-letter (Charedi groups) through to more flexible interpretations (US Reform, UK Liberal at the other pole).

Orthodox is usually divided into Chasidic, Traditional, and Modern, and there are different groups within each, especially among the Chasidic. Not all think exactly alike on every issue. There are also lots of Jews in the vast gulf between Modern Orthodox and Conservative. (I usually consider myself somewhere in that spectrum.) Conservative means different things depending on whether you are in the U.S., Israel, or somewhere else. Reform I think is the largest non Conservative/Orthodox movement, and probably the largest movement, at least outside of Israel.

Reconstructionists came out of Conservative Judaism but are considered more liberal than Reform. Liberal I associate with Europe rather than the United States. I'm not sure how Progressive are different from Liberal. I've also heard of Jewish Renewal which I think is a kind of more open mix of people and beliefs.

All of the above trace their origins to Rabbinic Judaism. There is also Karaite Jews who reject the Rabbinic tradition and have their own understanding of Hebrew Scripture. I think they just recently started allowing converts.

There's lots of different ways to look at it. Judaism101 is probably okay for an overview. The main thing I learned from taking World Religions in college was that everything in every religion was really too complicated to be organized.

by way of fact they're questioning approximately poorly bred purebreds that come from a small gene pool by way of fact the fool breeders merely shop breeding the comparable canines by way of fact they have the comparable call. properly bred purebreds are the healthiest, by way of fact their breeders intently pick in a thank you to in effortless terms right get rid of undesirable characteristics and enhance good characteristics. The canines would come from a "smaller gene pool" even with the shown fact that that's intently observed to get rid of issues. Mutts would come from a greater gene pool, yet they are actually not likely to be from properly bred mum and dad so they are able to have merely as many issues as one breed or issues from each and every breed in its history! So, that's rubbish even with the shown fact that a lot people say the "smaller gene pool" hurts the breeds. additionally, astonishing now that's being perpetuated with the aid of dressmaker canines breeders, it is the perfect protection they could why they're breeding mutts so they'll yell it at all people that dares question their stupid breeding practices. upload: certainly the technological awareness does not help the concept that mutts are fit than properly bred purebred canines. A properly bred purebred canines is well-being screened and is not ordinary to be wearing undesirable characteristics. Mutt is a known term, please teach me any "technological awareness" that helps the concept that they are fit, in view that they arrive from ANY genetic history quite of a carfully chosen healthful inventory? How is the concept that a "greater gene pool" that still comes from each and each a form of "small gene swimming pools" and therfore nonetheless carry all of those gentic characteristics quite of a few that are intently monitored and eradicated is fit merely by way of fact there are greater components at artwork technological awareness?!?!? All those mutts are nonetheless a skill of each and every of the inbreeding it took to create those unique breeds and to cultivate canines. in case you will analyze mutts to purebreds, you may examine each and all the components till now making a end. comparing mutts to purebreds with an identical high quality breeding, the poorly bred purebreds will in all threat have greater themes. yet mutts are not bred with the making plans a properly bred purebred is, so because it fairly is an entire diverse tale! you may't roll all purebreds into one ball, and there are very very very few mutt breeders obtainable doing any actual well-being screening and genetic making plans so i don't see ANY foundation for assessment!
