Which is the cheapest and safest place in India for tourist?
We are newly married couple and planning to tour some good places in India in last week of may 2010 for 20 days with economically.
I belong to Jharkhand. But start my traveling from Kolkata. Is tour agency good option? Or I should go alone. Please explain me also about hotel charges and other costs.
Thanks

Hi there Buddy!!!
I'm not sure what you mean by "cheapest" and "safest" place in India. The reason I am asking you this is that when you travel there is bound to be expenditure. And in every city and town there are places where you can get boarding & lodging service at "cheap" prices. Its only that you need to find them. Also, go and plan it yourself. Keep tour operators/agency out of this. They will charge you a bomb shell.
But on an average, you can take it that you will have to spend Rs. 600 per day per room in any of the tourist destination. Mind you this is only an average I am talking about. There will be destations where it can cross Rs. 1500 also due to the popularity of the place and the season.
Look I myself am a backpacker most of the times and being single allows me freedom to save money by not hiring a room instead going with a dormitory or simply cloak room bath. Obviously you can not do the same, as you are not single any more :D [Good for you n congrats]
First lets plan an itenerary and then look at cheap stay options. In the heat of summer most tourists head to the hills and places like Nanital, Mussorie, Dharamsala, Shimla, Darjeeling etc.... I mean that is obvious as these places are relatively cooler even in summers. Tariffs at these places would definitely be on the higher side due to the peak season. The other option would be to think contra. I mean go to places which see low tourist turnout during this time. Rajasthan in summer!!! How about it???
It would be rather naive of anyone to think, not for me though... I normally visit Rajasthan once or twice every year for the sheer love I have for the state.... summertime is cheap time. And most destinations have hotels which are both decent and priced very reasonably. Now enough of gyaan... the itenerary:
Day 01: Dep. ex. Ranchi [assuming you are based there]
Day 02: Arr. @ New Delhi
Day 03 & 04: Sight seeing in New Delhi
Day 05: Early morning dep. to Agra & full-day sight seeing
Day 06: Sight seeing at Fatehpur Sikri. Overnight bus to Jaipur
Day 07: Early morning Arr. at Jaipur. Base camp for 3-days
Day 08: Sight seeing in Jaipur
Day 09: Sight seeing in Ajmer. Back to Jaipur & overnight bus/train to Jodhpur
Day 10: Early morning arr. at Jodhpur. Base camp for 2-days. Sight seeing full-day.
Day 11: Venture out into desert & local sight seeing. Overnight train to Mumbai
Day 12: Arr. at Mumbai. Base for 2-days. Local sight seeing.
Day 13: Local sight seeing. Late night dep. for Aurangabad.
Day 14: Early morning arr. @ Aurangabad. Visit Daulatabad & Ellora. Late night dep. for Secunderabad.
Day 15: Early morning arr. @ Secunderabad. Base for 2-days. Local sight seeing.
Day 16: Local sight seeing. Late night dep. for Bhopal.
Day 17: Late evening arr. @ Bhopal. Rest. Base for 2-days.
Day 18: Local sight seeing
Day 19: Local sight seeing. Late evening dep. for Ranchi via Bilaspur & Rourkela. [Note: Limited direct connections to Ranchi ex. Bhopal and even Bilaspur].
Day 20: Late afternoon arr. @ Bilaspur. Almost immediate dep. for Rourkela. Almost immediate dep. for Ranchi.
Day 21: Arr. at Ranchi
So, basically your major sight seeing destinations will be:
New Delhi, Agra- Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Mumbai, Aurangabad- Ellora, Hyderabad, Bhopal
Notes:
a. All major railway stations have clean dormitory accomodation and some even have room- accomodation. So, check with Railway people about the same. On possession of an onward travel ticket, you can stay in such places. Really cheap.
b. At Delhi, there are places which will start at Rs. 500 but may not be good. I recommend you head straight to the narrow streets of Nizamuddin dargah where cheap accomodation would be available. But note that in Delhi and some places in North India (esp. UP) the checkout time is 12Noon... meaning if you checked in at 6AM and plan to vacate the following morning, you will be billed for 2 days!!! So, watch out for this catch.
c. If your onward travel is immediately after sight seeing... I recommend you vacate the hotel and put the luggage at railway cloak rooms. All railway stations have cloak rooms charging reasonable rates. All you need is to have a valid onward journey ticket.
d. Ensure you have confirmed or RAC reservation for all your rail travels. Else, look for alternative ways including breaking your journey into parts. For example, if you are unable to get a ticket to New Delhi direct, look at breaking your journeys into parts like Ranchi to Mughalsarai, Mughalsarai to Kanpur and Kanpur to New Delhi. Also, look at starting your journey from a different but major station. For example, Dhanbad has more options to Delhi than Ranchi. So, you could look at travelling to Dhanbad and then boarding a train from there instead of Ranchi.
e. MOST IMPORTANT: Ensure you have minimal luggage. It always helps. Maximum 3pieces of luggage for 2-of you should do. Do not take too many clothes as you have time to get

i think of you may pass to the North eastern states of India. they're very diverse from what you assume India to be. The places are a very diverse from the "INDIA" people understand. My own conventional is Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. yet there are some standards you may fulfill with the intention to go into Arunachal Pradesh, which im not very sparkling approximately . (yet whats google for). additionally you may pass to Shillong, Cherrapunjee in Meghalaya. i've got faith get admission to it quite is extremely much less complicated analyze to Tawang. There aren;t any 5-star inns or something yet i dont think of which would be a project. optimistically you will think of roughly it and are available to a call !

Travel in india by train is always an adventure but it is true some parts are much safer than others eg Tamilnadu/Rajasthan/Uttara khand/Gujrat/Kerala etc.are considered safer for travel. Now,since the heat is unbearable hence I would not suggest Rajasthan but you can try parts near kolkota eg.Sikkim/Nepal/Arunachal etc.Why do'nt you try internet? Please try a good tour operator in your area after you selected some places based on my suggestions above.I would suggest you try some cool hide outs due to excessive heat.
