Was it common to have mixed cladding on a house?

I just bought an old farm house that has cedar shingles on 3 sides, and clapboards on the front. Was this a common practice? I've seen this cone around town and occasionally in New England magazines. Why was it done?

Common enough. Clapboards were more expensive back in the day so they were used largely on the street facing side. Yep, it's that simple. Builders do the same thing today. Ex: Brick facade w/ wood siding everywhere else.
