I'm a forester in the Adirondacks. I'm interested in anything that involves the environment, efficiency, and saving money!

  • Can I use an Impact WRENCH on lag screws?

  • Whats the best outdoor power equipment brands?

I'm looking at Brush cutters (aka clearing saws, brush saws), which aren't exactly common tools to have, but I was wondering about the brands themselves. STIHL and Huskvarna are good choices obviously, but they are expensive. Does anyone know anything about the following: Tanaka, Efco, or Echo? They are significantly cheaper than the Scandinavia brands, but how does the quality compare?

  • Was it common to have mixed cladding on a house?

I just bought an old farm house that has cedar shingles on 3 sides, and clapboards on the front. Was this a common practice? I've seen this cone around town and occasionally in New England magazines. Why was it done?

  • Can you put an ATV track kit on a 2 wheeled tractor?

Like a BCS or Grillo s wheeled Tractor? These 2 wheeled tractors are beefly little machines but I don't think they would do real well in soft areas. Think ATV track kits would work? wheeles are 5”x10”x20”, here's a link http://www.earthtoolsbcs.com/html/walk-behind_trac... . I don't know anything about ATV track kits.

  • What types of accounts should I draw from to pay for a Down Payment on a House?

I have an IRA, a CD and a Checking account. My IRA is making less than my CD at this point, with some more financial management, that could change I suppose. If I draw from my IRA I will have to pay the taxes. If I draw from my CD early I would get penalized for the interest earned. I'd rather not drain my entire checking account either... For example you have your IRA has $8,000, your CD has 10,000 and your checking account has $10,000. Your down payment required is $15,000. What would you do?

  • If I'm working under the table, can I use a contract?

I am providing a specific service, and I want to make sure I'm excluded from specific responsibilities that may arise with the project that I would advise against or want nothing to do with. I am flagging out (hanging colored ribbons) a right of way for a transmission line to a Cell phone tower. The trees in the ROW will be cut down and harvested. I do not own the land or the trees, I am just being paid to hang flagging. I do not consider myself a business, so I would be working under the table. Can I still have a contract describing what I am and am not responsible for if I'm getting paid under the table? Would it be difficult to set up a legitimate "business" for this project if I make less than $200?

  • How do you rotate a house 90 degrees?

I'm thinking about buying a small house, a salt box, and renovating it to be more energy efficient. One of the most basic ideas of a passive solar design is to have long side (the front) facing south to maximize exposure to the sun. I'm sure this could be done with a crane, the way they move modular homes. Its a Timber frame structure, so its fairly ridged. Is there any other way this could be done?

  • What are the Physical requirements for a house to meet FHA and RD loan standards?

I've heard several things, none of them very specific. Things like "must ensure the well being of the occupants", but what specifically. What about foundations? I've hear talk of peeling paint, roofs that last for two years or more, hand rails. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

  • Any good, inexpensive, table saws?

I'm looking to buy a table saw, but not a piece of junk. I don't really need the bells and whistles, I just want something that is going to last. I'm the type that normally would pay extra money for a better tool, in the case of choosing one thats either $30 or $60. But when there is a difference between $100 and $600, I'm less likely to take that leap. I was thinking Makita, or a brand on that level. I've given up on all things craftsmen, power tools especially. Any suggestions?

  • Tips on meeting people.?

I moved to this town a few months ago, with no friends or relatives withing a few hundred miles. I live right smack in the middle of town, I go to the bars, I go to events, but I can't seem to really make any friends. Any tips? Conversation, places to meet people, things like that.

  • Dry Laid stone foundation?

In the era of post and beam construction, most barns and houses were once built on dry laid stone foundations (no cement/mortar). I know it probably varies from state to state, county to county, town to town... But do dry laid stone foundations meet modern day building codes in your area? Any experience constructing them? I live in a cold climate, if I were to build one I would bring it below the frost line and back fill with coarse gravel to prevent too much shifting from frost. Or a rubble trench?

Looking to buy a house, wondering what to expect. List 1.) how much you pay. 2.) how many square feet your house is, and 3.) is your primary source of heat electric?

Right now I pay 30$ a month, in the middle of winter (I keep my thermostat at 55 degrees). So tell me, what do you pay... I'm bracing myself.

  • Can you hike up a ski slope without paying for a ticket?

Can you legally hike up a ski slope (or at least on ski resort property) without buying a ticket, and ski down? I'm sure the rules vary from one slope to another, but generally speaking? I enjoy snow shoeing up mountains, and all that, even if its only for one ride down at the end of the day. I haven't been on the slopes for so long because its sooo expensive. Any thoughts?

  • Conibears, Dye them or Paint them?

I'm looking to prep some 330 conibear traps. Anybody know the pros and cons of dying vs painting them? And if you do dye them, what do you boil them in? Or do you use speed dip?

  • What are those little skis called?

Not Ski-boards, not alpine, not telamark, not cross country... they are for walking kind of. They have a carpet, or hair like material on the bottom so that you go forwards, but not slid backwards... Anyone know what I'm talking about? What are they called, and what do you know about them? Thanks.

  • Did the DMV take my title?

I just registered my truck a week ago. A couple of days later I realized my title wasn't with the rest of my paper work. Does the DMV take your title and send you a new one when you switch owners? Or did I just loose the darn thing?

  • Last Child left in the woods? SAVING OUR CHILDREN FROM NATURE-DEFICIT DISORDER.?

Is it just me or are the children of the world drifting farther and farther away from nature? I don't mean to single this individual out- but it baffles me that someone doesn't even know where wheat comes from. In a world of asphalt and supermarkets, have we gone past the point of altering our own environments to creating entirely artificial ones? To the point where we can't even identify the source of our sustinace?
