Buy the prep book or practice exams published by the company that makes the test. Practice a lot. Study the individual types of questions and understand how they are created and what correct *and* incorrect answers look like. Notice the types of texts on the test - what are the common structures (i.e. problem and solution, cause and effect, etc)? Understand where to find main ideas and supporting points in those types of texts. Don't make the mistake of thinking that studying won't help you improve your score - it will if you study the test itself. Also know how the test is scored and don't leave any answers blank if the test is scored by adding up points for correct answers. Finally, know how much time you have and if it is sufficient to read the texts first, or if you should skip to the questions and just read to find the answers.

Use common sense and don't waste time pondering the questions. [Especially on standardized tests.]
