Australians: Does your government pay you if you are too fat to work?

I think a guy my friend "met" on the internet is feeding her a lot of bull. He also claims he is taking care of his mum, so the government is paying him to not work and watch her? If it is true about being too fat to work - uh - how fat do you have to be?

Yes, that is possible with a doctors certificate. You can receive a carers allowance whether you are employed or not, but the carers allowance is a small amount of money and not enough to live on.. sounds like he is unemployed and on the dole as well.

If you could get a doctor to certify that you are morbidly obese and unable to work you could stay home and receive a pension but it wouldnt be very much, probably much less than half you would get working full time, sounds like a nightmare. If he was too fat to work its unlikely he would be physically able to take care of an elderly person, but if he was getting a carers allowance as well it might add up to a reasonable amount, although it sounds like medical expenses might cost a large chunk of it.

He receives a Carer's Pension. That is given to a person when they take care of another family member (keeping them out of local nursing homes or hospitals). As far as being too fat to work, I think that is a load of BS! I am sure U could go to a doc and get them to say tht u were 2 fat 2 work TEMPORARILY..but it wouldn't last too long!

Yes, there are many carers in Australia and they receive a payment from the government. It's definitely not living the high life though. And it's definitely not the government paying him to "not work". As for a Homer Simpson scenario of gorging yourself and then being given a home office - definitely not!

If overweight prevents you from working due to associated illness maybe you would get an invalid pension. As for his mother, yes you can get a carers payment from the government. It works out cheaper for the government & frees up beds in nursing homes & retirement villages for the more needy.

I think if your so overweight that you classify as disabled, your able to go on the dole on a disbality dole.
