I am spearheading a community garden project with about 12 families to start.?

We are using Tractor tires with the sidewalls cut out for the raised beds. Has anyone had success planting in tires before?

Update:

That is encouraging. Do you have any links to pictures of "tire" gardens? We were going to make wood boxes but the donated material did not come through in time.

This is a great idea! Raised beds are excellent for growing vegetables but often a hassle to make. I've seen this work many times, in urban pea patches especially.

I googled "tire gardens" under images and got tons of results. :)

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. there is a community garden in Spokane that uses them and it is beautiful every year.

I live in South Dakota, people do that here all the time! It looks really cool.
