Best camera for making movies?

My boyfriends dream is to be a director and he has been doing gigs such as filming music videos and playing other roles on movie sets but i want to buy him his first camera to use for his movie that he is planning to make. I want to find out the best cameras that can be used and others that are really good as well. I want to surprise him for his birthday so need guidance and help on what camera to buy. 

I did some online research and they recommend the Canon XL2 but i want individuals opinions. Is the Canon a great camera? Are there specific types that are the best and what do i need to watch for when purchasing one say off Ebay?

Any other camera choices when shopping?
