"High-Speed Rail" is not a single entity with a single contractor. Because AmTrak shares the tracks with CSX, the focus has narrowed to an initial goal of increasing speeds of passenger trains, below 79 mph, to 110 mph. It would be a $3 billion project to build a third rail line along right-of-way owned by CSX. The work could be finished in three to five years. Eventually, upgrades would allow trains to reach 150 mph on those tracks. To reach the highest speeds -- approaching 200 mph -- electrified rail would have to be built along a separate route, a project that would cost nearly $20 billion. Currently the project is in the planning stage, which will take a considerable amount of time. Contact the US Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration.
