Is gold rum the same as dark rum?
I'm trying to find rum to make a cake, and I've read that it's better to use dark rather than gold. I only need a cup so I asked the guy at a convenience store if they had any small ones, and he showed me the gold. And I'm like oh no, I needed the dark rum. And he looked at me and was like ... this IS dark. And I'm like, no, that's gold..... And he held it next to the clear rum and said SEE, this one is DARK. And I'm just like ......... wtf, no.
So anyways, my question is, is gold rum the same as dark rum? Because I've seen dark rum in the big bottles and it definitely looks different..

No, they are not the same. Dark rum is very dark, like bourbon. What he was showing you was probably spiced rum.
In the end, for a cup, I doubt it makes much difference.

Well, for a cup or 8oz, you could probably buy 5 airline miniatures or a half pint if available. Appleton, Cruzan, & Bacardi all make a readily available dark rum. Stores do sell a rum extract for flavor if you can't/don't use real booze. Go to a full service liquor store and they will know what you want. For a recipe, you don't need the most expensive brand. Check the links.
