Is a catalytic converter necessary on a 1995 truck in NC?
In NC vehicles made before 1996 are not required to pass an emissions test (no OBD). My catalytic is making a terrible clanging noise and my guess is that it is shot. It's a beater truck that I drive rarely. Would YOU invest several hundred dollars in replacing it?

It matters not if you have to pass the emissions test, if the vehicle came with a catalytic converter, it is the law it keeps the catalytic converter. Find a universal converter that fits your pipe sizes and have it properly installed.
Faking the converter as one poster said is just as illegal, and his empty shell means he is dumping a lot of pollution into the atmosphere.

Your right about no emissions tests.... But it wont pass inspection if it doesn't have something that looks like one. I have a 1990 integra that didn't have a catalytic converter when i got it and the inspector told me they don't test it for emissions but they do look and see if it has one so we found and old one and drilled every thing out of it making it hollow and then welded it on. it passed inspection.

you will fail emissions inspection. The cat converter is important for controlling the undesirable chemical ingredients popping out of your tailpipe. i comprehend in my state (Maryland) they even seem under the motor vehicle to make effective this is nevertheless there. you are able to sell the only off the wrecked motor vehicle in case you have chose yet you will be able to in basic terms get 10 dollars for it. Yours isn't probable to bypass undesirable. They final longer than the muffler in many circumstances.

Yes
Many states do not require emmission testing, however, removal of a catalytic converter is a FEDERAL crime
