When did you buy your first pair of maternity pants? (with an update of course)?

Normally I love skinny tight jeans, but ever since about 8 weeks, they've been too tight around my belly, so I've been getting by with some older baggier jeans, and a few pairs of yoga pants.

Today, after a lovely ultrasound, I decided to go out and buy some maternity jeans as a little celebration to making it past what my doctor called the danger zone (I've had multiple early miscarriages).

Now the woman in the store told me they normally recommend waiting til after 20 weeks to buy maternity jeans! Since after you pop your hips are tends to get a bit bigger, and if you buy them before that, they might not still fit.

So what do women wear before that 20 week mark?? When did you ladies start buying maternity jeans?

I bought myself a nice pair of comfy maternity jeans that look good. I guess worst case scenario is I'll need another in 9 weeks.

And, for my contacts, I had a lovely ultrasound this morning, baby has grown from a peanut to a full fledged baby. He/she was moving around, kicking, flipping, he/she also got a bit annoyed with the ultrasound wand and kept turning away. Everything is great and healthy, heartbeat 167, and I've been told I can relax! http://preg.fertilityfriend.com/ug/entry/7606066.h...

Update:

Yeah, that's my problem, I'm just not comfortable walking around with my jeans undone at the top! I feel like they might fall off.

Update 2:

Oh poppy congrats! Hope both of you are doing well!

20 weeks? haha --- if I waited until 20 weeks I wouldn't be wearing pants! My second time being pregnant it came quicker (I was in them by 10 weeks) ... my first pregnancy I could hold out until I was 14 weeks. Both times I was able to wear them until the end - just make sure you don't get them to fit *perfectly* right now because they most likely will be a bit tight as you get bigger.

Even if you don't *look* pregnant yet wearing maternity jeans can be quite comfortable!!

I am SOOOO happy to hear everything is going well for you. I am always on the lookout for updates!!

PS: I had my son on the 22nd (he's now 4 days old) ... we are doing well. He was 8lbs, 11oz and 22 inches.

I had to buy my first pair even earlier than that, I believe. I didn't look pregnant, but NONE of my pants fit. You can only use a hair rubberband to add a few extra inches around the waist for so long before you start getting funny looks, haha. Also, I told myself that I would never buy the secret belly maternity pants because I thought they were so ugly, but let me tell you, I don't know how women survived without them. I don't know how I am ever going to go back to normal jeans! Good luck to you and enjoy your pants while they're new! I only have two pairs of maternity pants and although they are comfortable, I sure miss the variety of my pre-pregnancy wardrobe!

  • Oh my gosh hun its a BABY!!! AH!! I love it! That is amazing...

Good for you.. I'm so lame I'm like living this pregnancy through you like I'm pregnant all over again. Haha. Anyway.. about the pants situation.. with me I'm very tiny. I wore my jeans and I left them unbuttoned and then I took a rubber band or hair tie and wrapped it around my button and I put it through the button hole and back around the button so it held them closed.. I was bloated a lot when I was pregnant at first so I looked more pregnant then I was a lot. After 20 weeks I wore like lounge pants because maternity never fit they were way to big even the small size.

If you buy maternity now buy them just a bit baggy the same ones will fit a couple weeks down the line but your legs and hips and butt will probably get bigger.. lol yay right.

I hope that your morning sickness gets better for you and I am so glad your baby is getting BIG!!

I cant wait. Hopefully you will have pregger belly pics I know some people are funny about that.

Have a good week I cant wait for the next update!

I'm 16 weeks, and I've had a similar problem with my jeans. The rubberband trick has been working great for me, and I've also heard good things about the Bella Band, which can be worn with your normal jeans unbuttoned. But honestly, I've gone ahead and gotten some maternity jeans even though I'm not in them yet because I figure that if my hips get bigger further down the road, I'll just need to get a bigger size. A lot of women can't wear the same clothes throughout their entire pregnancy.

I was there at like 15 weeks because my tummy was a bit larger than normally is. I bought a couple of work pants. One pair doesnt fit me anymore (i'm 30 weeks now) and one pair does (the kind that has the stretchy band that goes all the way up over your bellybutton still fits). I had people telling me they bought them at like 9 weeks along. That is weird that lady would tell you 20 weeks though, i couldnt fit in my nice pants at that point (i could fit in my low cut stretchy jeans, but not work clothes). I noticed that maternity jeans are stretchy though and your legs arent really going to get much bigger so i am guessing that they will still fit. Heck, i am wearing these things after i have the baby, they are so comfy!

First of all, SUPER congratulations on your healthy pregnancy! I've been with you through the miscarriages and trying to get pregnant. I am 22 weeks now with a baby girl, so I know how happy (and anxious) you must be! I still haven't stopped worrying (and won't until I have her in my arms) and I am sure you are there, too. So glad to hear all is going well!

To answer your question, I bought my maternity clothes on ebay before I ever needed them, but I think I started wearing the jeans at 12 weeks. They were too big, but better to be comfortable than have the jeans too tight on my tummy. I know I was wearing them way before the 20-week mark for sure! It just depends on your pre-pregnancy size. I am very small-framed, so the bulge popped out on me rather quickly. Plus, given my previous miscarriages, I wanted to be sure she had plenty of room to grow without my pants squeezing her too tight. You do what is comfortable for you and don't worry what "they" say. If you need a bigger size in a few weeks, so be it, but you and baby need to be comfy now! I am so happy for you! Please keep us posted!

I didn't buy any maternity jeans in my first pregnancy. I couldn't find any of my maternity clothes from 5 years ago so I went out and buy some new ones when I was 8 weeks pregnant. I don't want to wear my pants/jeans unbuttoned. I rather move into those perfect fit belly pants/jeans and feel good in them. I've been wearing maternity pants/jeans since 8 weeks, I am now 11 weeks. I didn't wear maternity pants/skirts until 12 weeks in my first pregnancy.

Congrats, I so love baby pictures! Mine liked to kick the ultrasound wand.

What I wore for maternity pants was a comfy pair of sweats with a tie waistband. Until my friend gave me a pair of maternity jeans. These had a elastic material across the front to allow for the belly, and I wore these up until I had baby.

Congrats Alexandra!!! I'm glad it's all going well for you. How're you feeling with your morning sickness? I'm sure it must have got better.

I brought my first pair whilst at 12 weeks. I only wear skin tight ones and that made it even harder to wear the normal ones right after 10 weeks. I'm just over 25 weeks and my maternity jeans still fits me. It's one which has got a bit of expandable sides that u can adjust with your growing belly. I would recommend buying one of those.

Good luck to you, enjoy your pregnancy :)

    Congrats....you baby is precious...

I am 18 weeks and just bought a few things arounf 16 weeks, some stuff still a little big since I haven't really popped yet, but so much more comfortable than the clothes that were too tight.

    Do what make you comfortable.

    Best of Luck to you.
