    4) The guy is obviously really into books, probably a writer.

    He means that if we discard our literature we might as well be throwing away human lives.

    3) I dont know who said it but they said it because they mean people dont generally think for themselves they just let the government order them around and tell them what to do, which makes it really easy for the government to make whatever laws and regulations they please.

    2) It means exactly what it says...

    1) By "present" they mean its a gift. And the past is history so dont worry about it, tomorrow is the future so dont worry about that either.

    4. Not true, but maybe his thinking is that by burning the books, it's "burning" peoples knowledge.
