Can a teacher tell me if schools are still teaching basic grammar and writing skills?
The reason I want to know is that I've noticed that most of the people who use Answers and teens who email and text me don't use proper grammar. I notice there's no capitalization, no punctuation, and the spelling is atrocious. Do people just do this in texts and email or do they really write like this in school as well? It drives me crazy to see the way people write.

Schools are still teaching basic grammar and writing schools, of course some teach them better than others. I think when it comes to texting and e-mailing teens like to abbreviate things. I am a teacher and in school they are not allowed to use that form when writing or on anything that is submitted. Of course, maybe some schools would allow this but I hope not!

Here is the rub, many K-4 teachers are left to prepare kids for Middle School, Their favorite subjects are Math, Science, and Social Studies. In many cases writing, grammar, spelling and reading get short changed. Since they have no background English doesn't get started until 5th grade. Too bad.

Yes, kids are still taught the proper form of grammar and writing skills.
I find that kids today use many short cuts in the way they write.
The internet and cell phone texts are classic examples of this.
Unfortunately, everything seems to be speeding up on us and people are not as careful or care to be careful in their spelling.
Spell check fixes most of the errors.
Sad but true.
