Baby Only wants water?
My (almost) 4 month old son only seems to want water.
we give him water for hiccoughs, and an occasional drink and such and lately thats all he wants.
he will scream and cry and refuse his formula, and as soon as you give him the water he is calm.
He really drinks more water than formula lately, and when i tried to just NOT give him any water, he cries and cries and will not eat.
he is still gaining weight and is average size according to the growth charts, I was just wondering if this much water is bad for him and why is he wanting just plain water?

At his age, he should be getting 100% of his nutrition from formula or breast milk, and doesn't need any additional water for hydration. Any water you give him is just taking up tummy space that should be reserved for formula or breast milk and will ultimately have a negative impact on his weight gain and overall health (even if it hasn't yet). I would contact his pediatrician immediately to discuss this issue and what can be done about it. It may be as simple as changing formulas, or might require more study, but I do know that continuing to give him "more water than formula" WILL have a negative impact on his health. Good luck!

My baby's pediatrician said no water until she's 6 months old. If a baby gets filled up with water the baby won't want to eat/drink formula and the baby won't get the proper nutrients he/she needs. If your baby won't eat you need to call the doctor right away. Your baby should not be having more plain water than formula. That is not good for him. He may be growing, but that doesn't mean he's getting the things he needs.

Have you TASTED the formula? It's GROSS, if I had a choice I wouldn't take it either! You need to quit giving him the water so he drinks the formula you're giving him. It's what has the nutrients in it, not water! He can drink formula for hiccups or his coughs or whatever you meant to say there. If you offer him no other choice HE WILL drink the formula eventually! YOU created this problem by giving him the water in the first place, he didn't ever need it to begin with!!

Yes, this much water is bad for him. At best, water contains no calories and no nutrients, and fills his belly so he won't want the formula he needs to grow and thrive.
And at worst, large amounts of water can cause water intoxication -- it dilutes his blood and can cause seizures.
YOu need to stop giving him water. ANY water. Offer his bottle regularly. When he gets hungry/thirsty enough, he'll take it.

Well, he should have never had water in the first place. At this point I would ask his pediatrician what to do. Babies of his age should not be given water, for any reason.
Good luck. I'd be interested to know what to do next also.
