Whats a good shade tree without invasive or surface roots?
I live in zone 5 and this week is about the last for planting new trees but I'm having a hard time picking them. Like I said I'm in zone 5 I need a good shade tree 30-50 ft tall without loosing my yard and foundation to roots. I would like something that looks nice and has great fall colors. I see some trees around here that I really like, they are upright thick with small redish green leaves during the summer but no one I ask knows what they are. I would also like something fast growing if possible. What are some Ideas? I have a couple Redbuds I can plant but they don't really get thick enough to be a shade tree.

Maple is fairly fast growing, Oak is slower. Both are colorful in the fall.

I would try a Japanese maple, but go through a good nursery as there are many types and some can take shade better than others. You'll also want to qualify how much shade, etc.
