What's a good freeware or open source music editor software?

i use Audacity which is free and i think it works great, and as for intructions it depends on what you want to use it for, drag an mp3 file into it then hihlight the soundwave image and along the top toolbar click effects and most of them are listed for waht you can do. like if you want to chipmunk a song click effects then change speed and set it to thirty or so.
