What does a half note with a staccato symbol mean?

I know that for a quarter note, 8th note, 16th, etc, it just means play it quick, short & detached. Does it mean the same for the half note? That you just hit it that once & there is silence?

Thanks! =)

Yes a half note can be played stacatto if there is a "dot" right above the note. If there is, it should be played as a quarter note (as you already know the math.) But it wouldn't make sense to indicate staccato over a half note unless the composer intended to give the player what's known as counting rests mainly to keep everyone in time or in the pocket for the purpose of anticipation. A whole note can even be stacatto but you'd rarely ever see that. You basically answered your own question. : )

it means that the composer finally lost it completely. There is no official rule, just do what sounds the best to you.
