MLB changing & putting new rules for the All Star Game. Your thoughts? Story inside->?
NEW YORK (AP) -- There will be two extra All-Stars this summer.
Rosters have been expanded again by commissioner Bud Selig's special committee for on-field matters, with each team bringing 34 players to the July 13 game in Anaheim, Calif.
A pitcher who starts on the final Sunday before the All-Star break will be ineligible to pitch in the All-Star game and will be replaced on the roster, Major League Baseball said in a change announced Wednesday.
In addition, a designated hitter will be used in the All-Star game every year, including in NL cities. The DH has been used since 1989 when the All-Star game was played in AL ballparks. There would have been a DH anyway for this year's game.
"The changes are designed to make the All-Star game as competitive a contest as it could possibly be," said Rob Manfred, baseball's executive vice president of labor relations.
The players' association already has approved the changes.
All-Star rosters have steadily expanded. There were 28 players per team from 1969-97, and the size increased to 30 with expansion in 1998.
After the infamous 7-7, 11-inning tie in Milwaukee in 2002, when teams ran out of pitchers, rosters expanded to 32 players, including 12 pitchers, the following year, when the game first started counting for World Series home-field advantage.
The size increased to 33 players, including 13 pitchers, last summer, and will now be 34 players, with 13 pitchers per team.
Under a change that runs contrary to normal baseball rules, each manager may designate a position player who will be eligible for re-entry to the game if the final position player -- at any position -- is injured.
Previously, there was a special All-Star rule allowing re-entry only to replace an injured catcher

Why can't I find the "Home Field Advantage for the World Series" change? That's the biggest irritant to me. I don't know, it's okay. I prefer to see the pitchers have to bat though. But thats the NL in me coming through.

I like the added players, and the ability to replace any injured player. I don't like the DH every year, but I can understand why they did it; I liked how it was only used in AL parks.
The rule about pitchers not being in the All-Star game if they pitched the Sunday before- will they still be 'officially' All-Stars? Or will they be 'kicked off the team'?
I think it's clear that they REALLY don't want another tie- didn't last years go into extra-innings?
Maybe they should make a rule about how many innings the starter has to pitch?
I don't think it's fair that the All-Star Game determines home field advantage in the WS, but I DO think the All Star game should count for 'something'. What would other options be, though?

I am not really into these new rules. The increase of number of players to 34 is fine with me. The thing I oppose is using a DH in all All-Star games and not allowing a pitcher to pitch in the All-Star game if he pitches on the final sunday before the All-Star game. I think we should keep to the tradition of only using DH's in AL cities and not having the DH's in NL cities. Having a DH wouldn't allow pitchers to bat if it is in NL cities now which I have no problem with but wasn't Bud Selig the one who telling the Yanks, Red Sox, Dodgers to pick up the pace in games? Also, a pitcher works hard to deserve a spot at the All-Star game and you are not allowing him to pitch in it just becvause he pitched on the Sunday just before the All-Star game.

Some questions that aren't clear from the article. When did the operation take place? Had Colon signed with the Yankees at the time of the operation? Was the Yankees' regular team physician consulted and aware of the procedure? Was there a valid reason for the operation to take place in the D.R. and not in the United States? Does this operation explain the difference in performance by Colon over his most recent performances with the White Sox and Red Sox? Are the details of the operation available for the Yankees' regular doctor to review?

It's an exhibition game. Nothing proved that more than the 2002 tie. To most of the players, home field advantage for the World Series is going to be irrelevant. I understand why Manny Ramirez was always "sickly" the day or two before the All Star Game.

yes i sort of like it
but also they should limit players from a team i know that wouldn't fly
allow up to 3 re -enterys per team and if needed 2 re -enters for an injury
also there was no realy need for the DH rule the pitcher very rarly batted
the should allow pitchers that don't pitch a chance to bat if needed

I have never had much of an interest in this game, so it really means nothing to me.
Give the players the week off, and scrap the game. Have a real All Star game in November after the World Series, based on season performance, that way you extend basebal for another 2-3 more weeks.

What the hell, so if Tim Lincecum leads the NL in votes for pitchers and he pitches on a sunday. He wont be a Allstar? What's going on i don't like that rule.

Since it is supposed to be an exhibition, they can have all the players they want. Just get rid of the WS home field advantage rule.

the rules sound good. i think as ryan zimmerman, will probably get the 3rd baseman position for his league, as he deserves, that they should increase the other league by 2 more players...they should only be allowed to be revolving 3rd basemen. wouldn't it make you cry if you were chosen for 3rd base in the league opposite ryan zimmerman? and people were actually watching? that's too mean. go ny yankees.
