If Mr Jones is x years old, find the value of x and find the ages of his wife and son.

x + (x - 4) + (x - 31) = 82
3x - 35 = 82
3x = 35 + 82
3x = 117
x = 39
wife = 35
son = 8
Check: 39 + 35 + 8 = 82

Mr Jones' age = x
x + x - 4 + x - 31 = 82
3x - 4 - 31 = 82
3x = 117
x = 39
Wife is 4 years younger and son 31 years younger.
Mr Jones = 39
Wife = 35
Son = 8
