Do you think that there is a difference between lying and simply hiding the truth?

People often say "You lied to me!" if someone kept something from them. But I'm wondering what you guys think...I've never really thought that that should be considered lying. Not that it's justifiable or anything, just that it is a completely different thing. I mean, if someone asked you if you were hiding something and you said no, when you actually were, then THAT would be lying. But I believe that there is a difference between blatantly lying and hiding something.

THERE IS SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!!! Lying would be saying "I have an older sister who is 18" when you have a brother that is 2. Simply hiding the truth would be telling your friend you were going to go out for lunch for her birthday when you're really bringing her to her surprise birthday party.

I think it depends on how it's done, sometimes hiding the truth becomes very close to lying, like if you make it seem a certain way when it really isn't, for example: always eating eggs and then saying you hate eggs (not a great example I know but it's the best I can come up with) its close to lying because you make it seem like you really enjoy eggs when in truth you hate them.

yeah, theres a difference. lying is saying something untrue, and hiding the truth is not mentioning the truth

Yeah. I guess if someone was asking a bunch of people about something (some teenage drama or whatever) and you knew something about it but didn't speak up, that's not lying, that's just not telling.

I know what you're talking about! My friend got mad at me for "lying to him" today because I hadn't told him that his ex (and my close friend) had started seeing a new guy. I was going to get to it later ¬¬

The act is different, but I think a lot of people don't take it that way.
