Why would a hospital have video cameras in the patient's room?
My husband got very ill this week and went to the local hospital ER. He was admitted and placed in a room. He instantly noticed that there were video cameras mounted on the wall facing each of the two beds in the room. The nurse then brought in a bedside toilet and told him he would have to use it since there was no restroom in his room. He was placed in an ICU room due to shortage of rooms available. He was completely capable of going to the restroom and can walk just fine. He really feels uncomfortable with the cameras on him and really isn't ok with using a bedside toilet especially while under video surveillance. He feels like his privacy is being invaded. I have been in many hospitals and ICUs. I have never seen anything like this. Is it even legal? I mean they are video recording patients. These people are going to the bathroom and at times unclothed. The nurses use the monitors to watch the patients instead of having to walk and check on them. Kinda lazy for a small town hospital that doesn't even have a trauma center ER. The number of patients is small. This is a small hospital that is mainly used as a rehabilitation center after surgery.
My husband was admitted for pneumonia and doesn't need to be in an ICU but was placed there because of lack of room. The bedside toilet is what they brouhgt in because there is no restroom. I thought this was ridiculous and rather ignorant. My husband is capable of using the toilet and should not have been placed there. He should have been transferred to another facility. I bet our insurance gets charged for ICU care too. I think we desreve a discount. My husband didn't even get a regular room. He doesn't even have a toilet.
My husband is capable of walking to the restroom. He drove himself to the hospital. He isn't on any machines other than having an IV and they put him in an ICU. This is just crazy!!

Most ICU rooms I have seen do not have bathrooms. Because there aren't too many ICU patients that are able to get up and use them. So it's a waste of space and money.
The cameras are a safety device for the patients. Even if the department is staffed 1:1, there will be times that your staff are not in the room. Remember that most of the patients in an ICU do not have privacy as a top concern. Depending on the policy of that facility, I doubt that the cameras are recording anything vs just being a CCTV system.
You are correct that you should only be billed for routine inpatient care, and not ICU care or progressive care, since it was not required. If the ICU staff are not used to having non-ICU patients, you claim may be accidentally recorded at the higher rate, but this can be quickly addressed with/by your insurance company.
It's common in small hospitals and even in large hospitals that the best floor for your condition is full and you need to be placed in another unit that is capable of providing the necessary treatment. Sometimes that means that people with organ failure wind up in the cancer ward, or heart attack victims wind up in the ICU instead of the cardio ward. Not the best scenario, but the top priority is to make sure the patient gets the care that they need.
Unless he received inappropriate care, it sounds like things were handled appropriately.

the room sounds like an ICU room and cameras are to see the patients and make sure that they are okay. The bathroom in the room is not appropriate and he should have been able to go to the bathroom.
Did you ask that the videos be turned off? Should have. You can now write to them and complain and ask that the films be destroyed.

The cameras are there for your protectionin casee something happens. I have never heard of someone who was capable of going to the restroom being asked to use a bed pan inless for some reason they couldn't walk like if they give you medication or something. If not than I would say something to someone in charge
