Three guys went to a hotel and payed $30 for their room...?
Three guys were traveling and it was night so they stopped at a hotel for the night. They asked for one room and the hotel clerk said that it was $30, so each guy gave the clerk a $10 bill. They go upstairs and the bellhop brings up their luggage, but they guys don't tip him so he is a little mad. When the bellhop goes back down stairs, the clerk says that he charged them too much because the room was really only $25, and he gives the bellhop 5 one dollar bills to give back to the guys. Since the bellhop didn't get a tip, he puts two of the dollar bills in his pocket. When he gets to the guys room he gives the other $3 bills to them by giving each guy one dollar. So each guy really only paid $9, and 9 times 3 is 27 plus the two dollars that the bellhop kept, so it adds up to only $29. Where did the other dollar go?
I think I know the answer, but im not sure. So please simplify the answer so its not hard to understand.

$30 initial payment in register
3 x $10
$5 refunded $25 in register
Bellhop keeps $2 and gives the men $3.
The men paid $9 each = $27 and got $3 back = $30
$27 = $25 cash in register + $2 bellhops pocket. Remaining money $3 in mens pockets

I didn't really understand anyone else's answers so I decided to try:
costs 25 but they each paid thirty...
pretend they intended to pay 25 the whole time but they overpaid because they only had 10 dollar bills and they were expecting change
10+10+10=25
so 30=25
then take away the two that the bellhop took
so 28=25
then give back 1 dollar to each person so that they only spent 9 dollars each
so 25=25
(I sort of get it but it is still bugging me!)
now let's work back the other way:
25 is how much the room costs
25+2= room+tip
27=money the three paid all together
27+3= money they originally paid.
that's 30...
If you still don't get it then here's how it's supposed to be:
each paid 9...
9x3=27 (what they paid all together)
you don't add the tip! you add how much they got back!
Why? Because when the bellhop took their money, It was included in the room fee!
so 27+3=30! Ta-Dah!

This is real easy if you look at it correctly. The $27 the 3 men paid inlcudes $25 for the room and the $2 the bellhop kept. So, when you say they paid $27 for the room, that inlcudes the $2 the bellhop kept. Therefore, when you say they paid $29 for the room, you are adding in the $2 the bellhop kept, two times!
So, they paid $27 for the room -- they originally paid $30 -- they got back $3 -- so they paid $27 for the room, which means they paid $25 for the room and $2 to the bellhop, for a total of $27. They got back $3, to equal the $30 they originally paid.

$9 is all they paid equaling $27 and they have $1 in their pocket which equals $30 the room was only $25. $27 minus $25 equals the two dollars the bellhop has. the $27 apears that way because they ended up paying $27 ($25 plus $2) ultimately.

Oh wow...
This is KILLING ME!!!!
I can't figure it out!
Maybe tax...?
Edit:
But wait, that makes no sense, if they got the $3 back, they paid a total of 27 instead of 30... the guy kept $2...27+2=...29?!?!
Edit:
Ha! I got it! They paid 30, and was supposed to get 5 back, but only got 3 back. That means altogether they paid 27. If they got the other 2 back, then they only paid 25! Wow! That was tricky...

It's actually the problem of dealing with negative numbers. It should read: 9x3=27, LESS $2 for the bellboy = $25, which is what was actually due ($30 paid less refund of $5).

your riddle has false information, your stating that after he gave back the dollar bills each guy paid 9 dollars, when clearly your excluding the 2 dollars he took for his own, which infact makes them pay a different amount than 9 dolalrs

the other dollar never went anywhere see if it was 25 divide by 3 so
8 and 1/3 dollars each
it is worde so that u think the three given back are what they didnt pay but they paid less
the one dollar is the third of the three men tree thirds is one

Count backwards from ten to six, using your fingers. Now, add the remaining fingers you are holding up to the number six. Hey, you have 11 fingers!! Same parlor trick.
