What does the law say about finding lost items?

Is there a law that says you have to return a found item instead of keeping it? Does taking ownership of someone else' garbage have a similar law?

It depends on where you live. Good example was that iPhone prototype that is lost, the law there required the person to reasonably attempt to return it to it's owner.

Generally, garbage is public property, however, if it is in a dumpster run by a private company, it is their property. Whether they'd care you rummaging through stuff is another matter, they would likely care because they could be responsible if you hurt yourself.

  • Have to take an effort to find the person that lost the item. If he or she doesn't respond within a reasonable time (at least a week), it's yours. If they ask for it though, you have to give it back.
