Can mahogany veneer be stained?

My husband restored a family heirloom, but there was one piece of wood involved that was rotted beyond what he could repair. I asked a friend's husband to look at it, and he says he's going to try to replace the rotted part of the wood with mahogany veneer. We've already stained the rest of the heirloom black. The only thing missing is the piece my friend's husband has. I know nothing about woodworking, but I want to make sure this piece isn't going to look completely different from the rest of it. I also don't want to come right out and ask the man who's helping us, because I don't want to offend him.

Short story long, we'll be able to stain this just like the rest of it, right?

Yes, of course. Assuming that it's real wood veneer, not a vinyl veneer.

Mahogany is a very hard wood to stain because it is extremely hard. Therefore it don't want to soak into it. The best way to go about it is to almost paint it with the stain. Just do some tests on a scrap piece and you should be able to get it to match up.

See if he has a scrap piece and stain it.
