You can take drivers ed when you're 14, but can't take the permit test till you're 15. You must have had your permit for 6 months (and be at least 16 years old) before you can take your road test to get your license. Within the 6 months after getting your permit, you must have driven for at least 30 hours, 10 of which must be done at night.

when you turn 14 you go to the d.o.t. to take a test to see if you can get your learners permit. if you pass you take drivers ed anytime after you get your learners permit. then after 5 months after drivers ed when your at least 15 you can get your school permit and drive by yourself to school if you live more then a mile away. then when your 16 you can get your license as long as you dont get pulled over before then. then when youre 17 you get your full lisences

this is for iowa anyway. im sure all the states are the same though. im not sure.
