Nationality and Culture?

My father is of Italian heritage and my mother Irish. We were all born in America and have lived here our whole lives (me pops and ma) I practice Italian and Irish mostly Italian) traditions and the cultures are a large part of my life. I was born in an Italian part of Rhode Island (RI has many italians and irish). So the traditions were everywhere. Some people believe that you have to be full blooded of something like full italian or irish in order to be a part of the traditions and holidays ect. Is that true, i mean my father and his parents speak italian. And we have cousins in Cork Ireland and Messina Sicily

No, you don't even have to be partially blooded to take part in traditions and holidays. I live in China and we take part in their holiday celebrations and our Chinese friends explain traditions and invite us to their homes and let us participate with their families and I'm 0% Chinese.

in Australia we have people who belong to the indiginous culture that are only 1/16 or less of actual 'full blood' aboriginal. the way the government sees it is weather the person 'identifies' with the culture. if someone has a great grandmother who was an Australian aboriginal, and they have been brought up with the traditions themselves, even if their family are genetically 'watered down', then they are still recognised by the government as being aboriginal because that is the part of them they 'identify' with culturally.

this is the same thing. many Australians identify with their Irish heritage from many generations ago, others Italian, others Greek etc

you do not have to be 'full blood' to do this. there is rarely such thing as full blood. the mixing of genetic information is essential. no race is pure and all races change with time. Italians now do not look like the Romans of Julius Ceaser's time... how pure can a person be?
