How to locate a copy of a death certificate for geneology research?

I'd like to find my grandfather's death certificate, he died in 1970. I know the city and county where he lived and died but who keeps those records? Which government agency would I contact in order to find a copy of it? Thanks.

It depends on the state in which you live. Some states keep death certificates at the Vital Records Department and others keep them at the Department of Health, you would need to find out which and makes sure your are eligible to receive a copy under your state law.

Alternatively, you could contact VitalChek to assist you. Their services are not free but they do have information on what records are available for each state, who is eligible to order the records and what the current fees to order the records will be. https://www.vitalchek.com/

If he died in the US. The county as well as the state maintains a copy of the death certificate. You can contact the county recorders office and request a copy. There will be a fee, however if you indicate that it is for genealogical purposes the fee should be less because you do not need a certified copy. The cost should be much less that Ancestry and you will get the actual certificate and not just information from the index. That could provide additional information like the names of his parents and where they were born. Ancestry is a good research tool, but in many cases does not provide the full document.

You can contact the town hall and ask to be directed to public records- if they don't have it (sometimes things are moved for storage purposes after a number of years) they can tell you where to get it. Good luck.
