My van is making a knocking noise?

I have a 2000 Chrysler T & C with almost 150,000 miles on it. When I take my foot off the gas it starts making a knocking noise. When I'm pressing the gas it doesn't. Also, it doesn't do it every time I take my foot off the gas, just sometimes. I did notice this morning when I was using cruise control that it did it a little bit, off and on. I've spent quite a bit of money on repairs over the past couple of years. I really hate to have another expensive repair. Anyone have any idea what it might be and if it's something expensive to work on?

Update:

Thanks for your answers. We ended up having to take it to our mechanic sooner than planned because my right front brake stuck and was smoking. He thinks that right caliper sticking was causing the knocking noise. I drove it yesterday evening and this morning and so far, no knocking so hopefully that's all it was.

Having 150,000 miles on it, I doubt there is any major significant damage to the engine. I would first double check the oil level, double check the oil type and weight in the engine, then definitely have a good look at the knock sensor and make sure its working. That can throw off alot of things in regards to how the engine operates. Also, just check under the hood and make sure there is nothing that is rubbing, hitting, and interfering with the fan blades for the radiator. These types of intermittent problems like the one you are describing are often the most difficult to trace and correct. Let me know how it goes. If its not an inexpensive repair, good chance its the connecting rods that are out of spec, loose, what have you. If your in the market for a newer engine go to www.gundies.com and buy one of their out of their yard. Its the best deal you'll find, and the engine will probably run just as good or better than the engine in you T&C now.

If it makes the knocking noise while not moving and the engine is warm, its either your lifters or rocker arms
