In Criminal Minds, Why does Reed carry a revolver?

In the tv show Criminal Minds, I've always wondered why Reed carries a revolved (I think it's a Smith and Wesson .38, although I could be wrong) while the rest of the team carries standard-issue police semiautomatic handguns. Is there some significance to that, or is it just a random detail?

Because Reed is the smartest one. He knows that a revolver will always be better than a semi. They fire everytime, no jams, much easier to clean and maintain and he probably shoots better than the others so he doesn't need 10 rounds. Six will do just fine. Most people that need semis that fire 10 or more rounds is because they can't hit the broad side of a barn so they need that many.

Nah. In the first season, Reid had a crush on JJ, and they even went on a date to a Redskins game (courtesy of Gideon) but they ended up just staying friends. In the end of season 2, JJ met a boyfriend (now fiance) named Will on a case in New Orleans. He is Henry's (JJ's son) father. In the season 3 finale, during a case, they tell the team that she is pregnant. Little Henry (he's SO adorable!) is born in the end of season 4 episode 7, Memoriam. Then Jordan Todd takes over JJ's job for a few episodes while she is on maternity leave. Will and Henry also appear in the beginning of Criminal Minds's big 100th episode in season 5, named 100. I hope I helped!

I have wondered the same thing. They never explained it on the show. He simply just traded his Glock pistol for a revolver. I'm guessing the writers did it to make Reid seem different from the others giving him a gun that looks awkward on him. It actually bothers me that nobody ever told him to change it back since the in reality the bureau do not allow revolvers for their agents.

Reed never trusts/uses guns that much, in fact he doesn't like the concept of carrying a gun but has to for defending himself.

It could also be related, or on reference, to his "hidden personality"..as displayed in season 9 episode 6 - In The Blood. His hidden personality is Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry. Just a thought.
